Yahoo Graded Browser Support – Which Browsers Your Website to Support

One of the most frustrating things for a web developer is creating cross-browser compliant websites. According to Yahoo there are over 10,000 browser brands, versions, and configurations and that number is growing. With this many combinations it is virtually impossible to support all variations. At the same time it is important for a website to have a reasonably uniform experience for the maximum number of people.

Generally I have based my browser support on localized web statistics. I manage a number of sites that span multiple industries. Using a compilation of web statistics across these sites I can get a generalized picture for popularity. Yahoo operates on a similar strategy, although, theirs is slightly more scientific. Yahoo has also published an overview of their browser support methodology as well as public information.
