Using Linkedin for Link Building

It is not a surprise to many of us that most social networking sites and many forums are now using the nofollow attribute to control their internal linkage. This means that links included with your profiles, posts, or in your signatures generally have no effect on your search engine rankings.

Linkedin has not followed suit. Links on Linkedin profiles and within the Questions and Answer section as well as links in other areas of Linkedin do not currently use the nofollow attribute. This means that while you are on Linkedin helping other users, networking, and building your business, you can also be enhancing your overall search engine rankings by increasing your one way inbound links from topic related pages.

Hey Ryan,

You’re absolutely right. Here are a few quick and easy tactics that a lot of people people don’t use. The first is very basic. Create a unique URL for your profile page. It’s amazing how many people don’t do this. It’s a very easy way for you to help rank your Linkedin profile on page one the next time a prospective client searches for your name. The second thing to do is to customize your links. Rather than use the default “my website” link style that they offer, select “other.” This allows you to add anchor text to the links and describe them any way you like. Again, super basic (but often ignored) ways for Linkedin to help your business. Another great networking web site in my opinion is called Biznik. I’ve found I often rank better from their links than from Linkedin. It’s also a very good small business networking web site. It’s more for the business owner than working professional.
