Mozilla Phone – Help Design your Next Phone
As most of my regular readers know I am an iPhone user. I love my iPhone, don’t get me wrong. Even still, there are a number of features I would like to change or additions I wouldn’t mind making. If you’re in the same boat as me then you might want to start watching the Mozilla Open Phone project. Apple is a great company but I don’t think they really care what I need in my phone. The Android is an open source platform but Google didn’t call me during development to see what I thought should be added. I am certainly no expert on mobile technology but I do have an opinion. Mozilla is approaching a phone OS from a different route. They’re involving the general public in every aspect of the development. (If it actually gets developed)
At this stage the Mozilla Open Phone project is really just an open discussion about effective mobile interfaces. The mozphone.com website says, “The Mozilla Phone is a design effort by Billy May that explores, as part of the Mozilla Labs’ Concept Series, how a phone might interface more seamlessly with users. With great focus on physical interaction and industrial design , all are invited to contribute.” Many are speculating this open design project is the first step in creating a new open source Mozilla mobile OS.
I personally would love to see another mobile phone OS. If you’re with me, then please watch mozphone.com for updates and help contribute to the project!
