Google Webmaster Tools – 404 Error Repairing
The Google webmaster blog recently posted an article about using the Google Webmaster Tools offered free by Google to help find the source of inbound links that result in a 404 error. Until now it has been difficult to seek out and determine the source of links that result in 404 errors. Inbound links to your website resulting in 404 errors are bad for a couple of reasons. First, you will lose visitors or customers quickly if they arrive to your site at a 404 page. Second, links to your website that are not able to land on a valid web page means that you are also losing powerful inbound links.
Using the free tools offered by Google you can get a list of all of the broken inbound links. With that list, you will be able to approach the owners of these websites to repair the links to your website. I scanned our corporate website and found 4 broken links I was able to quickly prepare by using an .htaccess file.
