A Great List of Web Safe/Friendly Fonts

Today I came across a great chart showing web safe fonts by operating system and I thought I would share it with all of you. Designing for the web is difficult and one of the primary differences between print design and web design is freedom with fonts. For years, fonts have been a major issue for web designers and demand for font embedding support has been widespread. Currently, web developers are either forced to use a small number of web safe fonts outlined in the chart, or they must turn their stylized text into images making it impossible for the content to be search engine indexable or accessible to people with certain disabilities. Over the years there has been some support for font embedding by different browsers but none that is really practical from a cross browser compatibility standpoint. The WC3 has been discussing this problem, check out these minutes from a recent meeting: http://www.w3.org/Fonts/Misc/minutes-2008-10.

Until a solution is reached and is implemented, as developers, we will need to stick to web friendly fonts if we want to control our user’s experience. The chart below outlines a number of fonts and their operating system compatibility. Brown arrows suggest the font is likely available but was not present on all versions created while a green arrow suggest it is highly likely the font is available. If you find the chart too difficult to read, you can click it and it will open in a new window at 100% resolution.
